Title Page; base map given to users to plot their pathways, along with layered image of all pathways together.

Project Description

I approached this project with the goal of questioning what a map can be, what it can do, and what stories it can tell. Maps are generally designed to be used in reference to a physical space or pathway(s), so I wanted to explore how I could deconstruct the map as a pre-existing system, and find new ways of visualizing map-generated pathways. I presented my participants with a basic map of Cobble Hill, Brooklyn, along with a prompt: "You are in this neighborhood from 10am to 10pm. Plot out your pathway on the provided map, circling any establishments/buildings you enter." They were welcome to go places not explicitly labeled, as long as it was within the drawn boundaries. I visualized each pathway by first filling in the overall shape; then presenting only the outline of the pathway; and finally by straightening out each path into one line, placing a dot where a building was entered, and a slash where a corner was turned. I also layered all the pathways on top of each other to get an idea of what blocks/areas were most heavily trafficked by my users.

Disregard file 3. Google docs requires me to upload 3 files but I only have 2 for my project.
