Technology A — Pratt Grad ComD

Project Description

This system models the physical assembly and the many possibilities of studio ceramics through visual rules. Each vessel is assembled along a central axis from three stacked components - a base, midsection, and neck - selected from randomized geometric shapes and bounded sizes, ensuring the base remains the structural foundation. Surface appearances translate simulated physical and atmospheric conditions: clay body determines opacity (40% Porcelain, 70% Stoneware, 100% Terracotta), while glaze chemistry responds to kiln oxygen levels. Cobalt produces a constant deep blue, Copper shifts from an oxidized green-turquoise gradient to a reduced deep red, and Iron Oxide transforms from a warm yellow-brown gradient to charcoal. By combining and controlling the variables within this system, across 32 geometric profiles, 18 material states, and continuous component scaling, the system generates infinite unique, visually readable ceramic pots that can be helpful to the ceramicist when reading the appearance.
