Project Description

Eavesdropping is a visualization of the data I collected by eavesdropping in various parks in Brooklyn. I sat at each park and wrote down sentences and conversations I heard and tried to collect any data I could on the speaker, audience, topic, etc. I input this info into and spreadsheet, including the park in which they were recorded and then I coded a visualization of all the sentences I overheard. I coded different filters so that viewers can synthesize the data by age of speaker, park, and topic, and also coded a word cloud view so viewers can see the most used words in each location and by each age group. I projected this visualization on the wall and used cardboard boxes as a map of the parks and coordinated with the code to make sure each park corresponded with the box on the wall. The theme of my narrative I've been following throughout the semester is about human connection and the value of engaging in the physical world. I wanted to further this idea by collecting my own data and having it relate to my experience of the world. I chose to collect conversation because it perfectly encapsulates the serendipity and randomness we encounter when we just engage in our surroundings. And I chose parks because I wanted to choose a place where people specifically go to enjoy their surroundings, and specifically Brooklyn parks, because I didn't want to dilute my data pool with tourists who have other motives for going to a park and non-routine topics of conversation.
