Project Description

I live in Brooklyn, where I have become aware of how noise shapes the rhythm of my day and affects my emotional state. The NYC Open Data 311 noise complaint dataset reveals the city’s noise not simply in terms of how loud it is, but through when, where, and what kinds of sounds are recorded across the city. Using data from October 2025, I visualized noise patterns as they change over time. Noise complaint locations from each hour are connected, allowing individual points to form a continuous flow rather than isolated events. I chose tracing paper for its material quality. It allows images to remain visible without being fully revealed, making it possible to physically experience temporal shifts and overlaps between noise types. Rather than presenting everything as a single composite image, the work is printed in separate layers. This encourages viewers to compare or overlap different moments such as morning, afternoon, and night on their own. When viewed individually, each sheet reads as a self contained scene. When layered together, the broader rhythm of the city emerges.
