Project Description

This work is a system that transforms errors occurring in the process of machine text recognition into new visual and physical outcomes. By scanning diverse sources—such as clothing labels, packaging, books, and handwriting—the project experiments with how accurately machines can recognize text depending on resolution and typeface. The detected errors are extracted and converted into circular dot patterns, which expand beyond the digital screen into physical artifacts through laser cutting. In particular, recognized text areas are translated into line-based circular structures rather than filled forms, revealing a fragmented stratum of language that seems both readable and unreadable. Viewers encounter familiar words disassembled and recomposed into visual structures, simultaneously experiencing the instability of language and the limitations of machine recognition. Rather than framing errors as “failures,” this system reinterprets them as a new visual language. In doing so, it transforms unreadability itself into a resource, prompting reflection on the relationship between humans and machines, and on the shifting boundary between reading and seeing.
